2 Touchpad Moves the pointer and selects or activates items on the screen.

Issue 2: Scrolling feature of Touchpad is not working

Here are the steps to enable Virtual scrolling.

1. Click on start and select Control panel. Click on Classic View on the top left side of the control panel.
2. Double click on Mouse in Control panel.

3. Click on Device settings tab in Mouse properties window.

Note: If the Device setting tab is missing on your notebook or if the notebook show any error message as soon as you click on the device settings tab then it should be an issue with Touchpad driver. After installing the touchpad driver, Device settings tab will work properly. Then we can proceed with these steps.

4. Click on Settings in Device settings tab of Mouse properties.

5. Click on Virtual scrolling. Check the check boxes of Enable vertical scrolling and Enable horizontal scrolling. Then Click on Ok and click on Ok on Mouse properties window.

4. Click on Settings in Device settings tab of Mouse properties.
5. Click on Buttons. Select the check box of Enable buttons. Click on Ok. Click on Ok on Mouse properties window.

Issue 4: Decreasing sensitivity of the touchpad

Touchpad sensitivity must be reduced if curser jumps while you type any documents or if the mouse pointer is so sensitive. Here are the steps to decrease the touchpad sensitivity.

After installing the touchpad driver, Device settings tab will work properly and there will not be any issue with touchpad.

4. Click on Settings in Device settings tab of Mouse properties.

5. Click on + next to sensitivity and select Touchpad sensitivity. Slide the sidebar towards Heavy touch and Click on Apply and Ok. Then Click on Ok.

6. If the issue still persists, then it is an issue with the driver, uninstall the touchpad driver from device manager and reinstall the driver.

Issue 5: How to disable the touchpad

Solution 1: You can turn off the touchpad using the touchpad on off button. However, we can disable touchpad in touchpad settings.

Here are the steps to disable the touchpad.

2. Double click on device manager.
3. Click on + next to Mice and other pointing devices.

  2. this was no help at all... my compac computer doesnt even have an enable vertical scrolling button im quite disapointed! inface ive grown to hate this stupid laptop! i will never buy anything from compac again why cant the mouse just work like normal laptops? oooh no instead the frigin thing has a mind of its own, it works when it wants to work, you could be in the middle of typeing up some important email and the mouse pad sends your curser to the middle of your message and bam! next thing you know your typing oh hey joe how ya doing, its been along time moon pies are also good with dessert wine, and thats how my cat wiskers became a i once was part of a mexican dance tribe but have sense eaten my shoes are a beautiful color....ya know what i am saying DOES ANYONE OUT THERE HEAR ME? i just cant take it anymore i wanna throw my laptop at the wall, oh wait, i already did, but it survived the impact, not a scratch on it. my replacement mouse that i had attached in the usb hole thing however..... has sense past on, into a hundred peices as i whiped it into the corner of the door frame! so....once again technology thank you very much for causing me so much grief and annoyance <<---annoyance? is this a word?

    1. I know what you mean. I actually have an "enable vertical scrolling" option. It is already clicked, yet the right side of my touch pad does not respond at all.

To your concern about not having a "vertical scrolling" option. I thought the same thing. Ours is located in a different spot. Click the "+" next to "scrolling" and then you will see "one-finger scrolling". That is where the "enable vertical scrolling" is located. See if that helps you.

As to the mouse having a mind of its own; yes, I have experienced the same thing. I believe that the sensitivity instructions given will help that issue though.

I too am at the point of wanting to just buy another computer just because of the mouse issue. It has become a true annoyance. Back in the day, if I closed the entire laptop, waited for a couple of seconds, then reopened it, the touchpad would somehow "reset". This became annoying after months of doing it because it takes about 17 seconds for everything to reset again. Even that doesn't work anymore.

To the writer/instructor of this page... thank you. Your instructions were superb, I truly believe my touchpad is defective. You showed me how to fix many other issues (i.e. the sensitivity issue to which the last writer was referring).

To the last writer, you made me laugh out loud; I have experienced what you were talking about for several months and I have sent emails where I look like a complete numbskull :) I feel you, friend. This too may be my last compaq purchase.

Thanks again to the author; your advice was very comprehensive.

  3. Ok, so I'm the third "anonymous" guy. I just wrote like an hour ago or so. Anyway, there is a trick that worked SOMETIMES that I was reminded of as I still researched the issue of the right side of my touchpad not working.

If you press "fn" and "F7" and enable the "Karat Browsing", then that will work temporarily. One time, this worked for several days, while other days it did not work at all. I hope this helps. If I find something else, I will be sure to come back and report.

Touch works, so is the scrolling, only the left and right click buttons don't work. I also checked as per your suggestion above, no progress. Please help.
